Evergreen rockroses are found in the maquis around the whole Mediterranean . They can grow to 3 feet and have white or rose-red flowers that are more or less aromatic. In Turkey , there are three species. The distribution of a few species extends as far east as the Himalayas.

Rockroses are used as a dye plant in the Karatepe region north of ( Adana ) Turkey . At the suggestion of Turkish archaeologists in the 1960s, dyeing with plant dyes was reestablished there for the village's kilim weaving.
